A place for history
The Abbey of Vaucelles
At the beginning of August 1132, Saint Bernard, first abbot of Clairvaux, and a dozen companions founded a new abbey on the banks of the Escaut, on lands offered by Hugues d'Oisy, castellan of Cambrai.
Vallis cella – the monastery of the valley – is the 11th daughter of Clairvaux, the 58th of Citeaux, the monastic order in full expansion in this 12th century.

This unusual museum, which is both a society museum and a fashion museum open to contemporary creation, invites you to discover the lace-making heritage and textile arts of the Caudrésis.
The museum presents a technical collection illustrating the production line of wide-width Leavers lace – a Caudry specialty – as well as a textile collection mainly composed of samples and dresses in lace and embroidery from Caudry and its surroundings. The particularity of the local lace industry, which consists of re-embroidering lace mechanically or by hand, is also represented.
Donations from individuals, lace companies or even creators through partnerships regularly enrich the museum's collections.

The Louvre-Lens is the work of architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of the SANAA agency. Organized in an open space of 3000 m², the Galerie du Temps exhibits more than 200 key works from the Louvre Museum. By presenting masterpieces from the 4th millennium BC to the middle of the 19th century, the Galerie du Temps offers a complete and renewed journey through the history of art and humanity and allows visitors to appreciate the Louvre's collections in a new way. The Louvre-Lens is thus the first place to present the Louvre's collections outside the confines of the Parisian Palais: since 2012, more than 3000 works from the Louvre's collections have been presented in Lens.
Located in the heart of the battlefields and in the center of Albert, a city that symbolized the First World War, this museum, whose entrance is located at the foot of the basilica, retraces the lives of soldiers in the trenches during the offensive of July 1, 1916. Some fifteen alcoves and display cases are installed in a 250-meter underground passage used as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War. Sound effects, images and lights immerse visitors in the daily lives of these soldiers.
